WARSAW. JULY 30, 2010—The popular mobile travel platform, World Traveler, now comes pre-installed Nokia’s newly-released Nokia mobile device, the Nokia C6, Polish mobile solutions innovator Psiloc announced today.

“This is exciting news for Psiloc, as not only we see World Traveler pre-installed on Nokia’s newest device, but also one of Psiloc’s most popular applications, Font Magnifier, which automatically enlarges or decreases phone fonts for a user’s convenience,” Marek Filipiak, president and founder of Psiloc said.

World Traveler works on a “freemium” model, which includes both free plug-ins, such as a five-day weather forecast, currency converter and world clock, as well as premium plug-ins that are available on a paid-subscription basis, such as Flight Assistant and Travel Safe.

Popular Psiloc “Connect” application now on World Traveler

March 23, 2010

WARSAW. MARCH 15—Polish mobile solutions innovator Psiloc announced today that it has added the highly acclaimed Connect application to its flagship mobile travel platform, World Traveler, which is currently pre-installed on select Nokia mobile devices.

“Connect works by enabling your phone to shift automatically between network access points, according to your preferences,” Marek Filipiak, president and founder of Psiloc said. “This is perfect for everyone from the traveler to the commuting business person who would like to avoid the hassle of setting access points manually each time internet use is necessary.”

As of mid-March, Connect is now available as a premium plug-in on Psiloc’s World Traveler platform, available in World Traveler’s plug-in manager following a routine World Traveler update. Filipiak noted that offering the popular plug-in was a no-brainer, pointing out that use of Connect saves the active user money each day—not to mention countless hours each year.

WARSAW. FEBRUARY 19—Polish mobile solutions innovator Psiloc announced today that is has added a complete hotel bookings plug-in to its flagship travel platform, World Traveler, thanks to a newly-signed agreement with Finnish mobile hotel bookings leader Hotelzon.

“The new hotel bookings plug-in, which will be marketed under the Hotelzon name, will allow you to search for, find availability and book a hotel stay either by location, hotel category or length of stay—all through your mobile phone,” Marek Filipiak, Psiloc founder and president, said. “But for the traveler who suddenly gets stuck with nowhere to stay, the search option can be switched to location by GPS, which then automatically checks all hotels in the immediate vicinity.

“We consider this a key step forward in the development of our World Traveler product,” he added.

The Hotelzon bookings plug-in should make waves in what Filipiak noted to be a cutting-edge and highly-competitive industry that is bringing new products to the traveler on an almost daily basis. The Hotelzon plug-in offers a new twist, however, by offering a “GPS-radius” feature, which allows a traveler to scan his immediate area for available hotels—even if he does not happen to know his exact location.

“Simply switch into the plug-in and set your radius for five or 10 or 15 kilometers,” Filipiak said. “Then let World Traveler’s Hotelzon plug-in do the rest and find an available hotel that matches your standards.”

Filipiak also emphasized the reach of the new plug-in. Finnish Hotelzon is ranked as the biggest mobile hotel stay provider, with access to booking more than 90,000 hotels world-wide through their mobile phone application.

The government to the rescue?

October 13, 2009

Just when you thought big government was useless, the men in black step in to surprise you.

Well, make that the men in gray. At any rate,  in what should be considered great news for travelers the U.S. Transportation Department has finally begun fining airlines—and more fines are likely to come—for “arbitrarily” reimbursing or failing to reimburse passengers for lost baggage, according to a report by the Associated Press.

The move comes in lieu of the now widespread practice of basically ignoring a passenger’s complaints once his baggage disappears—especially if lost items have been purchased less than 24 hours before a trip. Thankfully, the U.S. Transportation Department has finally stepped in to say enough is enough.  Passengers will now be compensated up to USD 3,300 for lost baggage—or the fines will come.

Well, to put this very directly, it’s about freakin’ time.

A tough economy? Perfect…

October 7, 2009

Here’s an easy riddle: When does bad news become good news?

Just about any time that you still have money when others don’t.

As brutal as this sounds, it could not be more true than in the big, wide world of travel where the global recession has emptied hotels and forced travel suppliers of all kinds to adapt to a world with much less available cash than anyone would have predicted a year ago. Simply put, in a down economy—if you’ve still got even a little disposable income—the world of travel is in the palm of your hand.

But first let’s take a closer look at the bad news: Put simply, the hotel industry took a huge hit in 2009, with some experts stating that the fall equaled to or surpassed that seen following 9/11. Worse, it is clear that the slide will continue. The global hotel forecast, according to American Express Business Travel sees prices falling in 2010 in North American mid-range hotels by 1 to 4 percent, with upper range hotels looking to see a dip of 3 to 5 percent. Europe looks to be slightly less volatile, with prices sliding by 2 percent in mid-range hotels—although with a best-case scenario of a 2 percent upswing in prices.

Travel light—and secure those valuables…

Short of violence, a traveler’s worst nightmare may be theft. Whether we are talking about teams of pickpockets or unscrupulous hotel employees, the sense of violation when valuables are stolen is devastating. Then there are the endless phone calls to cancel credit cards, the panicked scrambles for cash, the trips to the embassy and the police to report the crime/replace the passport, etc.

You probably get the picture.

Even so, I’d say that relatively few world travelers put much thought into strategies that combat theft. After all, vacations are about fun, not worries and paranoia. That said, precautionary measures go a long way toward ensuring a stress-free trip. Moreover, the age-old security adage  applies: there is no patch for human stupidity.

Here are a few security tips well worth considering before your next trip.

  1. “Make two photocopies of valuables such as your passport, tickets, visas, travelers’ cheques, credit card numbers, insurance policy, itinerary and phone card details,” the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade writes. “Keep one copy with you in a separate place to the original and leave another copy with someone at home.”

On this note, here’s a checklist of travel documents to copy:

Flight rage and stress reduction…

September 18, 2009

A traveler was waiting patiently in line at the check–in desk of a major airline. The line was quite long and he noticed the executive in front of him growing angrier by the minute. By the time the executive made it to the desk, he was in a rage and shouting complaints at the attendant as if she were personally responsible for the long line (but of course, she wasn’t).

The attendant smiled kindly throughout the tirade and calmly proceeded to check in her most recent victim of “flight rage”—and when all was said and done, the executive was admittedly amazed by how professionally she had behaved. But when a second traveler began to compliment her on her performance, she just smiled and said:

“It was nothing at all, sir. That gentleman is flying to London but his luggage is flying to Manila.”

I hope the previous story is only that, a story. As a frequent flier, I would prefer to believe such things are possible—only how many times have you personally witnessed travelers behaving badly? “Too many” is probably your answer, but in my opinion most such problems are due to lack of information. Welcome to the Psiloc World Traveler blog!

June 16, 2009

flights_e75 Since 1997 we’ve been creating some of the coolest applications for smartphones on the face of the planet. we’ve won serious awards for most innovative application for our Infrared remote control program and 4 years ago, when the first World Traveler became available on Nokia S80 handsets, it wasn’t long before people were talking about our fully customized user interface and now, the latest edition makes selecting, tracking and being alerted to flights easier than ever!

World Traveler was just released on Nokia N97 handsets and I really wish I’d had this application years ago. In 2006 I missed my plane out of Heathrow because I trusted my buddy when he said ‘relax, we’ve got time.’ Why did I trust him? Because he spent a lot of time flying in and out of London visiting his cousin and he’s a very convincing guy. Total mistake! (more…)
